From the Renaissance of Sanatoriums to New Cities
Increasingly, in conversations about desired vacations with the 20-30 age group, you can hear: "I want to relax at a sanatorium, go for spa treatments, breathe fresh air, and eat well." Offering simply good hotels is no longer enough for modern tourists—there is a demand for eco-holidays and recovery from the stress of the big city, and the image of resorts strives to meet this. We explore new trends in resort architecture.

Renaissance of Sanatoriums

According to data from the international consulting company Like4Like, which conducted a study of the demands of modern Russian tourists, there is high demand for vacations in sanatoriums: it already exceeds supply by 50% and will only grow. Hotels are responding to the growing need for comprehensive recovery and are creating individualized wellness programs combining spa, healthy eating, fitness, and sleep. "In tourism, there is currently a growing demand for health improvement, a return of the trend towards sanatoriums and wellness complexes. That's why almost every country hotel we design includes a spa center," comments Anna Kulikova, Partner at FANTALIS Architects.

Eco-Friendliness and Innovation

"In our hotel projects in Kamchatka, we always consider why guests come to the peninsula—to enjoy the pristine nature and breathtaking views. The hotel should reflect this atmosphere: for example, have large panoramic windows with views of the volcanoes, and interiors should be dominated by natural materials to create a feeling of naturalness and unity with nature," notes Anna Kulikova.

The technical side is no less important. For instance, the Aurora hotel in Kamchatka is equipped with its own water supply and sewage system, and energy is generated by solar panels on the roof. "The tourist wants to disconnect from civilization, find peace surrounded by nature, but at the same time live in comfort and coziness. If a hotel is in the middle of the tundra, it must be able to provide itself with energy and water, which requires detailed structural and engineering solutions," Kulikova continues.

Design Hotels and WOW Accommodation

For some travelers, aesthetic solutions in resort architecture that emphasize the authenticity of a place and its local character are important.

Entirely New Cities

The active growth of domestic tourism entails not only the need to develop existing resorts but also to build new ones, often without geographical limitations.
Tourist territories are being developed comprehensively—both accommodation facilities and entertainment infrastructure are planned, with special territorial master plans responsible for long-term development.
