Is Sustainable Tourism Possible in Russia?Anna Kulikova, Partner at FANTALIS Architects, talks about the sensible approach of Kamchatka's environmental protection agencies, which are preparing in advance for the opening of the new Yelizovo Airport at the end of 2024. Work is already underway to plan tourist flow and its distribution among various natural attractions, considering the maximum recreational load on the territory. "Only a certain number of people can enter the Valley of Geysers, a very fragile ecosystem, during the tourist season. Therefore, the number of helicopter flights and tickets available for sale are calculated and limited," says the expert.
The development of sustainable tourism is impossible without the participation of local communities. They treat natural heritage with care, protect it, know the most beautiful places, and are ready to reveal their beauty to others. "We often work with places associated with the childhood memories of local residents, such as outdated sanatoriums and holiday camps. We try to treat such facilities with the utmost care," comments Anna Kulikova.
